Updated: Jul 8, 2019

This post is the most up-to-date resource for setting up your Echo Connect as on 12 April 2019.

Plug in Echo Connect

Place Echo Connect near an electrical socket that is close to a phone jack in your home. Plug in Echo Connect's power adaptor and phone cable—just as you would with your home phone. To set up Echo Connect, visit alexa.amazon.com and select 'Settings' then 'Set up a new device.' If you're using a smartphone or tablet for set up, open the Alexa App. Tap the Devices icon at the bottom right of the app, select the '+' at the top right, then select 'add device,' followed by 'Amazon Echo,' then 'Echo Connect.'

Add your contacts so you never have to look up a number

To add your contacts to the Alexa App, download the latest Alexa App for iOS (9.0 or higher) or Android (5.0 or higher) on your compatible smartphone or tablet, and then complete setup of Alexa Calling & Messaging.

You can then import your contacts to the Alexa App, and ask Alexa to call those contacts by name. As you add or update contacts to your smartphone, the updates will sync to Alexa automatically when you open the Alexa App. You can also add contacts. This is advised if you are setting up an Echo Connect for someone else.

Just ask Alexa to call any of your contacts

Once setup is complete, make a call from any supported Echo device that is registered to your account.

Calling with Echo Connect

Ask Alexa to call any of your contacts by name, or place a call using a phone number. Just ask:

Alexa, Call Sam

Alexa, Call 0547559080

...

To end a call, just ask:

Alexa, Hang up

You can also answer your home phone from any of your supported Echo devices. Just ask:

Alexa, Answer

Alexa, Ignore

Helpful tips

Calling by contact name

Alexa can place calls to any contact that you've synced to the Alexa App or added through website. If you want to call another Alexa Calling and Messaging user on their Echo, just ask: "Alexa, call Sam" and Alexa will default to placing the call through Alexa Calling to Sam’s Echo devices or the Alexa App. You can also ask for a contact's name and phone type—just say: "Alexa, call Sam's mobile" and Alexa will place the call using your home phone service through your Echo Connect.

Calling by number

In addition to calling your contacts by name, Alexa can also dial numbers directly. When asking Alexa to dial a number, say the numbers as you would dial them on your home phone.

Customize incoming call notifications

You can control which Echo devices announce incoming calls. By default, all compatible Echo devices will announce the incoming caller and play a ringtone. To disable ringing on a specific device, go to the Alexa App or website, select Settings, select the device you want to silence, select Sounds, and turn off Incoming Call Ringer. The device on silent will still pulse a green light when there is an incoming call. You can still answer and initiate calls on a device that has the ringer turned off.

Sharing a phone jack

If you need to share a phone jack between Echo Connect and a phone, use the splitter included with your Echo Connect. You can plug the splitter into the phone jack or directly into your Echo Connect.
